JUCC's Pipe Organ

The present pipe organ at Jefferson United Church of Christ is just one of many instruments to have served the church throughout its history. The first recorded pipe organ was installed in the church during the renovations of 1872. Little is known about this instrument other than it was operated by a hand pump. The organ likely received several updates throughout the early twentieth century, including the conversion to electric power and a new console.

A second organ was installed in 1909 at the cost of $1,200.00. Likely a Moller Organ, one major piece of this instrument survives today: the case and facade pipes which cover the pipe chamber. The carved walnut base and 2 rows of decorative pipes are not an actual part of the organ musically, but merely a decorative cover to the organ’s speaking pipes.

In 1962, Moller Pipe Organ Company of Hagerstown, Maryland, installed the present organ, opus 9636. The organ, constructed at the cost of $12,000.00, contains approx. 400 pipes arranged in 5 ranks. Despite its relatively small size, the organ fills the nave with a variety of sounds: from lush strings and soft flutes, to thundering bass notes and fiery reeds.
